If you are a beginner buying Bitcoin in India, the most useful thing you can know is what goes wrong. The seven mistakes I see most often: buying some other crypto token when you meant Bitcoin, sharing an OTP with someone who claims to be support, not checking the final rupee cost, forgetting about tax until filing season, putting everything in at once, never testing a withdrawal, and choosing a platform because of its ads.
Each one has a simple fix, and none of the fixes requires you to be technical. Learn the basics, start small, keep your codes to yourself, and know the tax rules before you sell. I co-founded Unocoin in Bangalore in December 2013, and I have been watching first-time buyers in India since before most of today's apps existed. Here is each mistake, why it happens, and what to do instead.
Mistake 1: buying 'crypto' when you meant Bitcoin
Most people who come to an app saying they want crypto mean Bitcoin. Then they see a list of hundreds of tokens, a few of them up a lot this week, and the story changes.
Here is a piece of my own history. The number one request at Unocoin since 2016 has been: when are you guys dropping a token? I have always said no. Launching a token is not hard. It is a few lines of code. That was never the issue. The issue is that if a token goes up a lot and then falls, everyone who bought at the top is someone I would be answerable to. My thesis has always been that Bitcoin is the future of money, and I did not want to sell people something else.
The fix: know what you are buying and why. Bitcoin has a fixed supply of 21 million, set in its software, and it is not issued by any company. Many tokens are issued by a team that can create more. If you cannot explain in one sentence what you are buying, you are not ready to buy it. Start with the basics on our Learn page.
Mistake 2: sharing an OTP
This is the mistake that costs people the most, and fastest. Someone calls or messages, says they are from support, says your account has a problem, and asks you to read out the code you just received. The code is the key to your account.
The fix: one rule, no exceptions. No genuine support team will ever ask for your OTP, password or recovery phrase. Not Unocoin, not your bank, not anyone. If anyone asks, end the conversation and contact support yourself through the official channels. Turn on two-factor authentication on day one.
Mistake 3: not looking at the final rupee cost
People compare percentages across platforms and miss what they are actually paying. GST adds to fees. Some products cost more than others on the same app.
On Unocoin, for example, an instant buy carries 0.5% plus 18% GST on the fee. On ₹1,000, that is ₹5 plus ₹0.90. A Systematic Buying Plan (SBP) carries 0%. Maker and taker fees on the order book are 0.2% and 0.3%. INR deposits are free.
The fix: for the same rupee amount, look at the total debited and the amount of Bitcoin you receive. Those two numbers are what you paid. Our fee table lists Unocoin's charges.
Mistake 4: forgetting tax until filing time
It is easy to meet India's crypto tax rules for the first time while filing your return. That is late.
Under the Finance Act 2022, profits on virtual digital assets like Bitcoin are taxed at a flat 30% plus 4% cess. 1% TDS is deducted on sales above the threshold, calculated on the sale value even if you sold at a loss. Losses cannot be set off against other income or carried forward. Every sale is reported in Schedule VDA of your income tax return.
The fix: keep a record of every buy and sale from day one, with dates and rupee amounts. Read our India crypto tax guide before your first sale, not after. It is general information, not tax advice, so check your own situation with a CA.
Mistake 5: all at once, instead of small and steady
The pattern is familiar. Someone hears about Bitcoin at a family function, reads one article, and puts in a large amount on the same day. Then the price drops, as Bitcoin's price often does, and they sell in a panic, usually at a loss.
The fix: start with an amount you could watch fall sharply without needing to sell. Many beginners prefer an SBP, which buys a fixed rupee amount on a schedule, daily, weekly or monthly. Because the amount is fixed, you buy more Bitcoin when the price is low and less when it is high. That is rupee-cost averaging. It does not remove risk and it does not promise any result, but it takes away the pressure of picking a day. On Unocoin you can start from ₹10. More on our Bitcoin SIP page.
Mistake 6: never testing a withdrawal
A balance on a screen is not the same as Bitcoin you can move. Most beginners never try to withdraw until the day they need to, which is the worst day to find out there is a problem.
The fix: once you are comfortable, send a small amount to a wallet you control, just to see the process work. On Unocoin, Asset Controls let you move assets to your own wallet anytime, described as zero-fee transfers. Read the network fee shown before you confirm, test with a small amount, and protect your wallet's recovery phrase on paper, offline. Our security guide walks through it.
Mistake 7: picking a platform by its ads
Big ad budgets and celebrity faces are not a safety feature. Neither is a high ranking in an app store.
The fix: check things you can verify yourself. Is the platform registered with FIU-IND as a reporting entity under the PMLA? How long has it been operating, and through what? Can you withdraw your Bitcoin to your own wallet? Are the fees published clearly? Do they ever promise returns? Anyone who promises returns on Bitcoin is telling you something nobody can know. Our Is Unocoin safe? page shows how to check these for Unocoin, and the same questions work for any platform.
And remember the context. Crypto products are unregulated in India and can be highly risky, and there may be no regulatory recourse for any loss. Registration with FIU-IND is about anti-money-laundering reporting. It does not protect the price of anything.
Before you buy anything
If I could give a first-time buyer in India one habit, it would be this: ask your questions before you put money in, not after. What am I buying? What does it cost me in rupees? What tax applies when I sell? How do I get it out?
That is what Ask Satoshi on IndiaBitcoin is for. It is an education guide that answers in English or Hindi. It gives no investment advice or price predictions, and it never asks for your OTP, password, seed phrase, PAN or Aadhaar. Ask it the questions you would feel silly asking a person.
Common questions
How much should a beginner start with?
Only an amount you could watch fall sharply without needing to sell. Many beginners start with a small SBP; on Unocoin it can start from ₹10. This is education, not advice.
Do I need to file anything for small Bitcoin trades?
Every sale of a virtual digital asset is reported in Schedule VDA of your income tax return, and profits are taxed at 30% plus 4% cess. Keep records and check with a CA.
What is the safest way to learn?
Read the basics first, ask questions before buying, start small, and test a small withdrawal. No genuine support team will ever ask for your OTP or password.
Can I start with ₹10?
Yes. On Unocoin a Systematic Buying Plan starts from ₹10, with a 0% SBP fee.
