On Unocoin you cannot add money by UPI today. You add rupees by IMPS or NEFT from a bank account in your own name, and INR deposits are free. Across India, UPI for crypto platforms has been uneven since April 2022, when NPCI said it was not aware of any crypto exchange using UPI and major exchanges stopped taking UPI deposits soon after.
So the honest answer to "can I buy Bitcoin with UPI?" is: not directly on Unocoin, and be very careful with anyone who offers you a way around that. Never pay a stranger's UPI ID to get crypto. Use the official deposit page of a platform you have checked, and the rest of this post explains why the rails are the way they are and how to do an IMPS deposit in a couple of minutes.
The short answer
- Unocoin supports IMPS and NEFT for adding rupees.
- INR deposits on Unocoin are free.
- Use a bank account in your own name, matching your KYC.
- Do not use unofficial routes, agents or someone else's UPI ID.
What NPCI said in April 2022
On 7 April 2022, NPCI, the body that runs UPI, said it was "not aware of any crypto exchange using UPI." Within days, Decrypt reported that major Indian exchanges had halted UPI deposits, with at least one citing regulatory uncertainty and another saying its UPI facility had been off since the previous December.
That statement did not ban anything in so many words. But in payments, uncertainty does the work of a ban. Banks and payment partners do not want to be the test case, so the rail quietly closes.
Why rails for crypto in India have always been the hard part
I have lived the rails problem since before Unocoin existed. In 2012 and 2013, at our Bitcoin meetups in Bangalore, people kept asking how to buy. The options were foreign exchanges like Mt. Gox and Bitstamp, and the problem was not the website. It was getting rupees there. The money simply would not move easily.
We built Unocoin partly to solve that. Then on 6 April 2018 the RBI directed the banks and other entities it regulates not to deal in virtual currencies or provide services to anyone who did, with three months to end existing relationships. Overnight, Indian exchanges could not move rupees through the banking system. Many struggled to stay open. Unocoin stayed, and was part of the case that the Supreme Court decided on 4 March 2020, setting the circular aside.
So when someone on our team tells me, as they did earlier this year, that Indian buyers are used to paying by UPI everywhere and the missing UPI option is a real point of friction, I agree completely. It is friction. But "just add UPI" is not a product decision a platform makes alone. It depends on banks, payment partners and how the rules are read. When the rail is not clearly open, a platform that has already been through a banking cut-off does not gamble with its customers' money to save them two minutes.
How to add money by IMPS or NEFT, step by step
- Finish KYC first. Deposits only work once your PAN and Aadhaar are verified inside the app.
- Open the deposit or "add INR" screen in the Unocoin app or website.
- Copy the bank details shown there for your account. Use only the details shown inside your own logged-in account, never details someone sends you.
- In your bank app, add them as a beneficiary and send by IMPS (usually fast, any time) or NEFT (in batches).
- Send from a bank account in your own name, the one matching your KYC. Deposits from third-party accounts create problems.
- Wait for the balance to show. If it does not appear in a reasonable time, contact support with your bank reference number: support@unocoin.com, toll-free 1800-103-2646, Monday to Saturday, 9:30 AM to 6:30 PM IST.
Once the rupees are there, you can buy instantly (0.5% fee plus 18% GST on the fee) or start a Systematic Buying Plan from ₹10 with ₹0 SBP fees. If you set up a plan, you can keep a balance topped up by IMPS and let the plan buy on schedule.
What not to do: unofficial routes and strangers' UPI IDs
When an official rail is slow, unofficial ones appear. Someone in a Telegram group offers to sell you Bitcoin if you pay their UPI ID. Someone else offers to "load" your exchange account for a small fee. Some of these are scams outright. Some may land you with money that turns out to be connected to fraud, and then your own bank account gets frozen.
My rules:
- Never pay a stranger's UPI ID to get crypto.
- Never share your OTP, password, PAN or Aadhaar in a chat or call. No genuine support team will ask for your OTP or password.
- Never let anyone "help" you by logging into your account.
- Never use a route whose point is to skip KYC or TDS. Those rules exist, and dodging them can cost you far more than the convenience.
What to check on any platform's deposit page
Whatever app you use, the deposit page tells you a lot about the platform.
- Are the methods and any fees written down clearly?
- Does it insist the money comes from an account in your name?
- Is there a support contact that does not run through WhatsApp strangers?
- Is the platform registered with FIU-IND? Unocoin is registered as a reporting entity under the PMLA.

What happens once your rupees arrive
A deposit is not a purchase. Your rupees sit in your account until you buy, which gives you a moment to decide how. A single instant buy is simple. A plan spreads the same money over many days or weeks, so you are not betting everything on one price. If you are unsure, a plan with a small amount is the gentler way to learn how Bitcoin behaves.
Whatever you buy arrives as satoshis. One Bitcoin is 100 million sats, 10 crore, so ₹500 buys a modest number of them and that is normal. The home page counter shows how many sats ₹10, ₹100 and ₹1,000 buy at the live price.
And keep your records from day one: the deposit reference, the date and the amount. Buying is not taxed, but when you sell, profit is taxed at 30% plus 4% cess, 1% TDS applies on sales above the yearly threshold, and every sale goes into Schedule VDA. A clean trail from bank to platform makes that filing easy. Check your situation with a CA.
Will UPI come back?
I do not know, and I will not pretend to. It depends on NPCI, the banks and their partners. If the position becomes clear and a platform can offer it properly, buyers will benefit. Until then, IMPS takes a couple of extra taps, and those taps keep your money on a path with a paper trail.
And whatever the rail, the asset is the same. Bitcoin is volatile, crypto is unregulated in India, and there may be no regulatory recourse for loss. Start with an amount you could hold through a sharp fall. If you are new, the Learn page covers the basics in about ten minutes.
Common questions
Why can't I deposit to a crypto exchange with UPI?
After NPCI said on 7 April 2022 that it was not aware of any crypto exchange using UPI, major Indian exchanges stopped UPI deposits. Unocoin supports IMPS and NEFT.
Is IMPS deposit to a crypto platform free?
On Unocoin, INR deposits are free. Your own bank may have its own charges for IMPS; check with your bank.
How long does an IMPS deposit take to reflect?
IMPS usually moves quickly, but the time to show in your account can vary. If it has not appeared, contact Unocoin support with your bank reference number.
Should I pay someone's UPI ID to get crypto?
No. Paying a stranger's UPI ID for crypto is how many people get scammed or end up with frozen bank accounts. Use only the official deposit screen inside your own account.
