To withdraw Bitcoin from an Indian exchange to your own wallet: open your wallet and copy its receive address, paste it into the exchange's withdrawal screen, check the first and last few characters match, send a small test amount, wait for it to arrive, then send the rest. Read the network fee on the confirmation screen before each send. Once the Bitcoin is in your wallet, your recovery phrase is the only thing that can restore it, so write it on paper and never share it.

On Unocoin, Asset Controls let you move assets to your own wallet anytime, and the site describes these as zero-fee transfers. Whether a transfer to your own wallet creates tax is not specifically ruled on; the common view is that it is not a sale. Keep records and check with your CA. The detail, and the reasons behind each step, follow.

Why withdrawal matters

If someone asked me what to test first on any Bitcoin platform, in India or anywhere, my answer would be: can you take your Bitcoin out? Not the app design, not the referral bonus. The withdrawal.

A balance on a screen is a promise. A withdrawal is the promise being kept. When you hold Bitcoin on an exchange, the exchange holds the keys and shows you your share. That is convenient, and for small amounts while you are learning it is how most people start. But you should know, from your own experience, that the door opens when you push it.

I co-founded Unocoin in 2013, and I have watched this industry in India go through a banking ban, a Supreme Court case, a new tax regime and new anti-money-laundering rules. Through all of it, the simplest test of a platform has not changed. Push the door once, with a small amount, before you ever need to.

Before you send: test with a small amount

Every first withdrawal should start with a test. Pick an amount small enough that losing it would be annoying, not painful. Send it, wait for it to arrive in your wallet, then send the rest.

Bitcoin transactions cannot be reversed. There is no bank to call and no chargeback. If you send to the wrong address, the Bitcoin is usually gone. A test transaction costs you one extra network fee and buys you certainty. It is the cheapest insurance in Bitcoin.

You need a wallet first, one whose keys only you hold. Software wallets run on your phone or computer and suit small amounts. Hardware wallets are small devices that keep keys offline, and many people prefer them for larger amounts. Whichever you choose, download it only from the official source.

Copying the address safely

A Bitcoin address is a long string of letters and numbers. Nobody types it by hand. You copy and paste it, and that is where the risk sits.

  1. Get the address from your own wallet. Open the wallet, tap receive, and copy the address it shows, or scan its QR code with the exchange app.
  2. Never use an address someone sent you in a chat. If a stranger offers a wallet address to help you move funds, stop.
  3. Check after pasting. Some malware swaps a copied address for the attacker's. Compare the first five and last five characters on both screens.
  4. Make sure the network matches. You are sending Bitcoin on the Bitcoin network. If your wallet or the exchange offers other networks or tokens, choose Bitcoin.

Fees and confirmations

Every Bitcoin transaction pays a network fee to be included in a block. When the network is busy, fees rise. When it is quiet, they fall.

Here is what Unocoin publishes. Its fee summary lists batch BTC withdrawals as free, and Asset Controls are described as zero-fee transfers to your own wallet. Its fee page also says that when you send Bitcoin to an address, a fee of 0.0005 to 0.0009 BTC is collected, set dynamically by network congestion. The app shows the fee that applies before you confirm. Read that line. It is the most important number on the screen.

Once sent, your transaction waits to be included in a block. Your wallet will usually show it as pending, then confirmed. Bitcoin blocks arrive roughly every ten minutes on average, but it can take longer when the network is busy. Many wallets show the transaction as received before it is confirmed; wait for confirmation before treating it as done.

One more fee worth knowing: since March 2023, Unocoin's fee page says inactive trading accounts carry a custodial fee of 0.0001 BTC per month, inclusive of 18% GST. If you are moving everything out and not planning to use the account, that is worth knowing too.

After it arrives: protect your recovery phrase

When you set up your own wallet, it gave you 12 or 24 words. That recovery phrase is the master key. If your phone is lost or your device breaks, those words restore the wallet. And anyone who has them can take your Bitcoin.

  • Write the words on paper. Not a photo, not a screenshot, not a cloud note.
  • Store the paper somewhere safe and private. Some people keep copies in more than one place.
  • Never type the phrase into a website or a message. Restoring a wallet happens inside your wallet app or device, by you.
  • Never share it. No genuine support team will ever ask for your OTP, password or recovery phrase.

My own approach, in principle: I do not keep everything in one place, and I use multisig, where more than one key is needed to move funds. You do not need that on day one. You do need to understand that once Bitcoin is in your own wallet, nobody can reset your password for you.

Does a transfer to yourself create tax?

India's VDA tax rules from the Finance Act 2022 tax profits on transfers at a flat 30% plus 4% cess, with 1% TDS on sales above the threshold, no set-off of losses, and every sale reported in Schedule VDA. Moving Bitcoin from your exchange account to a wallet you own is a different thing from selling it.

There is no specific ruling on self-transfers. The common view is that sending coins to a wallet you own is not a sale. Keep a record of every transfer: the date, the amount, the transaction ID and the address, so you can show it was your own wallet if anyone asks. Then confirm with your CA. Our page on self-custody and tax covers what the law says and what it leaves open.

Mistakes that cost people Bitcoin

Most lost withdrawals come from a small number of avoidable errors. Choosing the wrong network or token when the wallet offers several. Pasting an address without checking it. Sending the full amount first instead of a test. Writing the recovery phrase in a phone note that later syncs to the cloud. Or taking help from a stranger who offers to do it for you over a screen-share. Every one of these is fixed by slowing down for two minutes.

A short checklist

  1. Wallet installed from the official source, recovery phrase written on paper.
  2. Receive address copied from your own wallet.
  3. First and last characters checked after pasting.
  4. Network fee read on the confirmation screen.
  5. Small test sent and confirmed.
  6. The rest sent.
  7. Records kept for tax.
