Crypto customer care scams in India work by putting a fake support number or chat in front of you at the moment you are stuck, then asking for something no genuine support team ever needs: your OTP, your password, your PAN or Aadhaar details in chat, your seed phrase, or a screen-sharing app. Once they have it, they move your money or your coins.
The rule is simple and has no exceptions. Real support never asks for your OTP, password, PAN or seed phrase in chat, on a call or in a message. For Unocoin, the only official channels are support@unocoin.com, +91 7788978910 and toll-free 1800-103-2646, Monday to Saturday, 9:30 AM to 6:30 PM IST. If you have already shared something, call 1930 now and contact your bank.
Even we thought a real investor was a scam
A story from Unocoin's early days. In 2014, an email arrived from someone offering to put money into our company. My co-founder deleted it. The sender wrote again. He deleted it again. A stranger offering cash to a tiny Bitcoin company in Bangalore looked exactly like a scam.
The third email said he was an investor in Coinbase and BitPay. It was Barry Silbert. He became one of our backers.
I tell that story because the instinct my co-founder had was correct, even though the email turned out to be real. Unexpected contact, offering money or help, is the shape of most scams. The cost of being wrong in his direction was a slightly awkward reply. The cost of being wrong in the other direction is your savings.
Why "customer care number" searches are dangerous
When something goes wrong, a withdrawal stuck or a login failing, people search "[exchange name] customer care number". That search is where scammers wait.
Fake numbers turn up in places that look trustworthy: search results, map listings, comments under videos, social media posts and replies, forum threads, and messaging groups. Some fake profiles copy a real company's logo and name. If you post a complaint publicly, an account may reply within minutes saying "DM us, we can help."
The safe habit: never use a support number you found in a search result or a reply. Go to the company's own website or app, type the address yourself, and use the contact details listed there.
What fake support asks for
The script changes, but the requests repeat:
- "Share the OTP you just received to verify your account."
- "Tell me your password so I can reset it from our side."
- "Send a photo of your PAN and Aadhaar here in chat for re-KYC."
- "Enter your 12 words on this page to restore your wallet."
- "Install this app so I can see your screen and help you."
- "Send a small amount to this address to release your withdrawal."
Each one gives them control. An OTP lets them approve a transaction or a login. A seed phrase gives them your self-custody wallet outright. A screen-sharing app lets them watch you type everything else.
The four things nobody genuine asks for
Memorise these four. No genuine support team, at any exchange, bank or wallet, will ask for them in chat, on a call or in a message:
- your OTP
- your password
- your PAN or Aadhaar details, sent through chat or a message
- your seed phrase (recovery phrase)
KYC on a real platform happens inside its own app or website, through its own verification flow. On Unocoin, KYC with PAN verification and Aadhaar authentication is done inside the Unocoin app or site only. Never in a chat window, never over WhatsApp, never on a call.
Your seed phrase is different from everything else. It is not a login detail. It is the wallet. Anyone who sees those 12 or 24 words owns your Bitcoin. Write it on paper, keep it offline, and never type it anywhere except when you are restoring your own wallet on your own device.
Screen-sharing and "remote help" apps
One request deserves its own warning, because it sounds harmless. A fake agent says, "Let me take a look, just install this app." Screen-sharing and remote-access apps let the other person see everything on your phone or computer as you type it, and sometimes control it. With that, they can watch your OTP arrive, read your banking app and approve transfers. No exchange needs to see your screen to help you. If anyone asks you to install one, end the conversation.
Official Unocoin channels
These are the only official support channels for Unocoin, as listed on our site:
- Email: support@unocoin.com
- Phone: +91 7788978910
- Toll-free: 1800-103-2646
- Hours: Monday to Saturday, 9:30 AM to 6:30 PM IST
If anyone contacts you claiming to be Unocoin from any other number or account, assume it is not. If you are unsure, hang up and call one of the numbers above yourself. Real support will never be offended that you checked.
How to check a number before you trust it
A thirty-second habit stops most of these scams:
- Close the search results, the chat and the social media thread.
- Open the company's website by typing the address yourself, or open its official app.
- Find the support page there and compare the number or email with the one you were given.
- If they do not match, the one you were given is not real.
Also notice how the conversation started. Genuine support rarely contacts you first on WhatsApp or Telegram to fix a problem you never reported. If "support" found you, rather than you finding support, be suspicious.
Protect the people around you
Scammers often target people who are new to apps and less likely to question an official-sounding voice. If your parents or relatives hold Bitcoin or use any finance app, tell them the four-item rule today. No OTP, no password, no PAN or Aadhaar in chat, no seed phrase. Ever. Ask them to call you before they share anything with anyone who claims to be from a bank or an exchange.
If you already shared something: 1930 and your bank
Speed matters. Report as fast as you can.
- Call 1930. It is the national helpline for financial cyber fraud, replaced the older 155260 number, and runs round the clock. Complaints are forwarded to banks, wallets and merchants, which can freeze money that is still in an account. The Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System behind it has saved more than ₹7,000 crore across more than 23 lakh complaints, according to a Rajya Sabha reply on 17 December 2025.
- Keep ready: your bank account and card details, transaction IDs or a statement, and the scammer's account number or phone number.
- Call your bank to block cards or UPI if anything was linked.
- Contact your exchange through its official channels only, and ask them to secure the account.
- Change your passwords and turn on two-factor authentication.
- If you shared a seed phrase, treat that wallet as lost. Create a new wallet on a clean device and move anything left in the old one immediately.
- File a complaint online on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal at cybercrime.gov.in.
And watch for the second wave. People who have been scammed often get contacted by "recovery agents" who promise to get the money back for a fee. That is usually the same scam, run twice.
