Crypto jobs in India: what working at a Bitcoin company is really like

Crypto jobs in India span engineering, compliance, support and security. A co-founder's honest view of the roles, the cycles, and how to pick a company.

By Sunny Ray, co-founder of Unocoin · · 7 min read

Crypto jobs in India fall into a handful of real functions: engineering, security, compliance, customer support, operations and finance, plus product and marketing at larger companies. The work is interesting, the problems are new, and you learn fast. The industry also moves in cycles, and when a bad year comes, it comes hard.

So my advice to anyone looking for a crypto job in India is simple. Learn how Bitcoin works before you apply, pick the function where you're strongest, and prefer companies that have already survived a bad year. This guide explains why, from someone who has co-founded and stayed with an Indian Bitcoin company since 2013.

The short answer

  • Roles that exist: engineering, security, compliance, support, operations, finance, product, marketing.
  • Growing fastest in importance: compliance, since Indian VDA platforms came under the PMLA in 2023.
  • What gets you hired: real understanding of Bitcoin, plus public proof of your work.
  • What to check: whether the company is registered with FIU-IND, how long it has operated, and how it behaved in hard years.

The roles that exist

Engineering

Backend engineers who can build systems that move money correctly, every time. Engineers who understand wallets, nodes and how Bitcoin transactions are built and confirmed. Mobile and web engineers for the apps customers use. At a Bitcoin platform, a bug isn't a broken button. It can be someone's savings.

Security

Key management, cold storage processes, access control, monitoring, incident response. Unocoin, for example, states that it keeps 95% of assets in cold storage with multi-signature wallets and regular security audits. Every one of those words represents people and processes.

Compliance

KYC, anti-money-laundering monitoring, reporting to authorities, tax deduction and reporting. More on this below, because it has changed the most.

Customer support

The most underrated job in the industry. Support teams handle deposits, withdrawals, KYC questions and, increasingly, people who are being targeted by scammers. A good support agent who can tell a customer "nobody genuine will ever ask for your OTP" at the right moment saves more money than most features.

Operations and finance

Banking relationships, reconciliations, treasury, TDS deposits. In India, where crypto businesses once lost access to banks entirely, this function keeps the lights on.

What 2018 taught me about careers in this industry

On 6 April 2018, the RBI directed the banks and other entities it regulates to stop serving anyone dealing in virtual currencies, with three months to wind down existing relationships. For an Indian exchange, that meant our bank accounts were going to be shut.

We had to lay off about a hundred people from our team just to survive. I want to be straight about that, because careers advice in this industry is usually written by people who joined in a bull market. Those were good people doing good work, and the company couldn't keep them because the rails underneath the business were pulled away.

Most of our rivals left India, pivoted, or shut. My co-founders Harish and Sathvik decided to fight the RBI in court instead. We won on 4 March 2020, when the Supreme Court set aside the circular. The company is still operating today, and the site states 2.26M+ verified users.

The career lesson I took from it: in crypto, the company you join matters as much as the role. Ask in your interview what the company did in its worst year. If it hasn't had one yet, that's worth knowing too.

Compliance is a career now

When we started in 2013, there was no framework at all. Then came tax: the Finance Act 2022 brought a flat 30% tax on VDA gains and 1% TDS on transfers. Then, in March 2023, VDA service providers were brought under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act and had to register with FIU-IND. Unocoin is registered with FIU-IND as a reporting entity under the PMLA.

That shift created real careers. Every serious platform now needs people who can:

  • Run KYC with PAN verification and Aadhaar authentication, without ever exposing that data.
  • Monitor for suspicious activity and file reports correctly.
  • Deduct and deposit TDS and help customers understand Form 26AS and AIS.
  • Keep up with changing rules and turn them into processes.

If you come from banking, fintech compliance, or a CA background, this is one of the most direct ways into the industry, and one where experience from outside crypto counts.

How to stand out

I've looked at a lot of candidates over the years. The ones who stand out do a few things differently.

  • They own a little Bitcoin and have moved it. Not as an investment pitch, but because they've used a wallet, sent sats, and understand what a confirmation is.
  • They have public work. Engineers with open-source contributions, writers with clear explainers, compliance people who can explain the PMLA rules in plain words.
  • They ask about risk. "What happens if this goes wrong?" is the best question a candidate can ask in this industry.
  • They don't overpromise. If someone in an interview promises customers profits, that's a red flag for any role that touches customers.

For freshers

Programs like Summer of Bitcoin are a strong signal. It started as a pilot in India in 2021, drew 4,816 applications in 10 days, and accepted 51 students from 26 Indian engineering universities to work on open-source Bitcoin and Lightning projects for 12 weeks, paid in bitcoin. Even if you aren't selected, the preparation gives you something real to talk about.

Questions to ask the company

An interview runs both ways. In crypto, the questions you ask tell the company as much about you as your answers do, and they protect you from joining the wrong place. These are the ones I'd ask.

  1. Is the company registered with FIU-IND? FIU-IND publishes its list of registered VDA service providers. A company that is vague about this is telling you something.
  2. What happened here in the worst year? Listen for specifics. A team that can talk honestly about a hard year has usually learned from it.
  3. How does the company handle customer funds? You don't need secrets. You want to hear that there are processes, cold storage, and people whose job it is to say no.
  4. How does the company talk to customers about risk? If the marketing promises returns, that culture will reach your desk eventually.
  5. Who would I learn from? In a young industry, the people around you matter more than the title.

A good company will be glad you asked. A company that gets defensive has answered the question for you.

Where to learn first

Before you apply anywhere, make sure you can explain what Bitcoin is, how the 21 million cap works, how a Systematic Buying Plan works, and how Indian crypto tax applies. The Learn page covers all of that in plain language, and it's what we'd expect a new hire to know in their first week.

And read how the industry got here. The banking ban, the Supreme Court case and the rules that followed explain why Indian crypto companies work the way they do today. If you understand that history, you'll interview better than most.

We've put the full story of 2018 to 2020 on this site, with the RBI circular and the judgment linked, so you can read the sources yourself rather than take anyone's word for it, including mine.

Common questions

Which skills are needed for crypto jobs?

It depends on the role. Engineers need strong fundamentals plus an understanding of how Bitcoin transactions and wallets work. Compliance roles need KYC, AML and reporting knowledge. Support roles need patience, clear writing and a sharp eye for scams. Every role benefits from understanding Bitcoin itself, not just the job description.

Are crypto jobs stable in India?

The industry moves in cycles, and the bad years are hard. In 2018, when the RBI cut exchanges off from banks, many companies shrank or shut, and Unocoin laid off about a hundred people to survive. Look for companies that have already lived through a bad year and still operate.

Can freshers get Bitcoin jobs?

Yes, especially if they can show public work. Open-source contributions, programs such as Summer of Bitcoin, and clear writing about how Bitcoin works give a fresher something concrete to point to.

Is compliance a good crypto career?

It has become one of the most important functions. Since 2023, VDA service providers in India must register with FIU-IND under the PMLA and run KYC and anti-money-laundering checks, so every serious platform needs people who understand that work.
